We are looking for a Project Engineer with a strong focus on design for manufacturing (DFM) to join our Design and Simulation team. In this role, you will design superconducting quantum processing units (QPUs) and test chips while ensuring that designs are robust, manufacturable, and aligned with both internal fabrication capabilities and external foundry processes.

You will act as a bridge between QPU design and fabrication, contributing domain expertise to tapeouts, managing design rules across different fabrication processes, and collaborating closely with foundries, in-house fabrication, and multiple internal teams. This role is critical to scaling IQM’s quantum hardware across multiple projects and manufacturing partners.

What will I be doing?

  • Designing superconducting QPUs and test chips, from concept to tapeout

  • Preparing, validating, and releasing designs for manufacturing

  • Managing and adapting design rules across multiple fabrication processes and foundries

  • Performing design calculations and simulations, primarily expressed as code

  • Laying out quantum chips programmatically using open-source and internal tools

  • Contributing to IQM’s design and simulation software stack, including KQCircuits

  • Developing and improving automation, verification, and testing of QPU designs

  • Participating in peer reviews of designs and code using git-based workflows

  • Acting as a design stakeholder in cross-team and external project meetings

  • Supporting and mentoring team members, including newcomers and interns

What skills do I need?

  • Several years of experience in silicon device layout and photomask tapeout

  • Familiarity with open-source layout tools such as KLayout, or industry-standard silicon design tools

  • Strong understanding of fabrication processes, ideally for superconducting circuits

  • Applied expertise in one or more relevant fields, such as:

    • Superconducting qubits

    • Microwave engineering

    • Quantum physics

  • Good Python programming skills and interest in software-driven design workflows

  • Ability to solve problems independently while collaborating effectively within a team

  • MSc degree in a relevant physics or engineering field, or equivalent practical experience

Nice-to-have experience

  • Background in superconducting qubit design or fabrication

  • Experience working directly with external semiconductor foundries

  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative tools (e.g. Git)

  • Experience improving design automation and verification workflows

Why IQM?

  • Full-stack quantum computing: From quantum hardware to software layers and beyond, we build across the full-stack.

  • High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours.

  • Never the smartest: Expect to learn constantly. You won't always be the smartest person in the room, and that's the point.

  • Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. They're friendlier than they look!

  • The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed.

  • Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market that's still being defined.

The future of computing won’t build itself. You might be one of the few who do.
