In this role, the Senior Quantum Algorithm Engineer strengthens IQM’s leadership across the stack by advancing quantum optimization methods and integrating them into real-world computational workflows. As part of the algorithms and applications department, the optimization team develops and applies quantum algorithms for solving hard combinatorial problems, with a clear ambition: pushing the field forward by turning good ideas into methods that actually run, scale, and teach us something new about what quantum optimization can do. We aim to couple algorithm development with hardware reality. We design with the device in mind, i.e. circuit structure, measurement strategy, and error-mitigation readiness, and then iterate directly against implementations on real QPU’s and realistic constraints. By closing the loop between algorithmic innovation and hardware realization, we aim to deliver quantum optimization techniques that are not just promising on paper, but also impactful in practice. The team and position are based in Munich, Germany.

What will I be doing?

  • Drive the integration of quantum subroutines into advanced classical optimization methods, including heuristics, linear programming, relaxations, approximation algorithms, and hybrid workflows

  • Design, implement, optimize, and benchmark novel quantum algorithms against classical counterparts

  • Simulate quantum algorithms on classical hardware to assess performance and scalability

  • Develop and maintain scalable software libraries and ensure seamless integration into broader applications

  • Collaborate closely with hardware, software, and research teams to ensure compatibility and impact

  • Publish research results and present findings at conferences and technical meetings

  • Design and execute experiments to validate, benchmark, debug, and refine algorithms

  • Contribute to consulting projects and proof-of-concept work for customers

  • Create technical documentation, reports, and educational content

  • Support team members through knowledge sharing, mentorship, and active participation in technical discussions

What skills do I need?

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field

  • 2–3 publications in quantum algorithm research

  • Strong background in quantum computing, quantum information, and classical computer science, including algorithm design and complexity theory

  • Deep knowledge of classical optimization methods and hybrid quantum-classical approaches

  • Proficiency with quantum programming frameworks (e.g., Qiskit, Cirq, QDK)

  • Ability to design and optimize scalable quantum algorithms and software libraries

  • Strong analytical, mathematical modeling, and problem-solving skills

  • Experience with scientific writing, technical documentation, and conference presentations

  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences

  • Collaborative mindset, reliability, accountability, and a drive for excellence and continuous improvement

What can I expect from IQM?

  • An opportunity to work with a passionate and diverse team on an important mission

  • A unique opportunity to make a real impact on the future of quantum

  • Growth and progress in a creative and open start-up environment
